Whether to use class variable or database table for user tracking in ruby on rails

Help me in ruby on rails logged in users tracking.
I am confused whether to use class variable or make a database table for tracking currently logged in users in ruby on rails?.
I tried making database table but never use class variable i wonder whether class variable is best to use then i give a try.
