Do you have to run your own server to deploy rails applications?

Sorry for being uneducated, but I am just starting to do web development with ruby on rails, and I was wondering if you had to use your own server to deploy your rails apps? I know that you COULD use your own server, but could I develop a rails app and deploy it on a server elsewhere?
